Keeping your HVAC system clean

Every appliance in your home needs occasional cleaning or maintenance. You clean your oven periodically, as well as the coils of your fridge, etc. Your air conditioner is no different than these, but most people don’t think of their HVAC as an appliance. When you look at it in this light, it is obvious that keeping your AC clean and maintained is important for proper function.

The cleanliness of your air conditioner can have a big impact on your household in several ways, including your family’s health and the health of your wallet. While there are some things you can do to keep your AC clean year-round, you should get an HVAC expert to fully clean and inspect your air conditioner twice per year.

The maintenance and cleaning done in the fall is much different than that done in the early spring, so both are equally important. Building a relationship with a community-oriented HVAC company should be done before this need arises. We offer comprehensive cleaning maintenance agreements for all HVAC units we service.

With most of the country on stay-at-home orders, it is more important than ever to make sure that our immediate environments are safe.

The first step is to understand why cleaning is required so that you can cut down on sources of dust.

Your HVAC system is likely a two part system in which you have an indoor appliance as well as an outdoor condensing unit. Both parts of the system must be cleaned regularly, and there are some factors that could make cleaning required more often.

Sources of indoor appliance dust and buildup.

Most of the cleaning you’ll need on your indoor AC component is due to dust and buildup from your home. There are thousands of tiny particles coming into your home through cracks in the windows, opening and closing doors, etc. This “dust” builds up over time in all of your appliances and throughout your home. It also builds up in your AC.

Your air filter is designed to help combat this dust by filtering the air coming into the unit, which also improves the cleanliness of the air blowing out of the unit. The air filter isn’t just important for running your furnace, it also plays an important role in your AC.

If you notice that your AC is getting very dirty quickly or that your filters are getting clogged in less than a month, you might need some additional measures to improve your indoor air quality. We offer such IAQ systems, and we are more than happy to discuss their benefits with you to see if they are a good solution for you.

Sources of outdoor condensation unit debris.

The condensing unit of your AC is outdoors and may need to be cleared quite frequently depending on your lawn and time of year. If you have a lot of falling leaves in your yard, you’ll need to make sure they stay clear of the condensation unit. If leaves or other debris clog the unit it won’t be able to function properly. Check for other small pieces as well, such as twigs and sticks. Making this a part of your regular routine when mowing your lawn is a good way to keep up with the practice.

You should take special care to have your condensing unit cleaned and inspected after storms. Damaging wind and flying debris can cause quite a bit of damage to an HVAC with an outdoor condenser. You shouldn’t try to take apart and clean your condensing unit yourself, but you should work to keep it clear of obstructions throughout the year, and have the coils cleaned additionally if necessary.

How to keep an air conditioner clean

If you are proactive, keeping your air conditioner clean is not that difficult. Between deep cleanings, you can keep your air conditioner clean by:

  • Change your filter once per month, or as recommended by the filter manufacturer.
  • Use the correct filter for your HVAC system, and ask us for assistance if you’re not sure.
  • Maintain your ductwork and have an expert repair when needed to ensure there are no leaks.
  • Have a pre-arranged HVAC maintenance schedule so that you don’t have to worry about when to call for a deep clean and maintenance.

Our HVAC professionals can provide you with more tips for keeping your AC clean based on your home’s conditions when they come for an inspection and cleaning.

If water droplets containing the bacteria are sucked into the HVAC system, they can be pushed back out into the common indoor environment
